Australian federal police Pipes & Drums

2007

Pipes and drums of the city of Canberra (PDCC) was formed in 1990 and in 1993 got the status of honorary pipe band of the Australian Federal Police.

In 2006 this band came to be officially called as the Pipes and Drums of Australian Federal Police (PDAFP), but at the same time maintaining its first name. Thus it is the same in two identities and in both the orchestras one and the same musicians play. The form in both the cases differ only by jackets, thereby the pipers wear tartan “Ancient Caledonia”, and the drummers – “Canberra”.

From the very beginning the band had the target to become the best in its category in the Australian capital. It does not participate in competitions, preferring to concentrate on the ceremonial aspect of performance and following in this traditions of the pipers’ military bands. Moreover a lot of their members participate in competitions as part of other bands, for example, in 2006 at the World Pipe Competition in Scotland.

The Band performs at the ceremonial events both as PDCC and PDAFP and gets high points for the level of performance, especially for the exactness of movement in defile. Apart from the numerous parades, festivals and celebrations in Canberra and its surroundings, the tour over China in 2002, appearance at the War Memorial in Australia together with the Scottish troops before the Edinburgh Tattoo in Sydney in 2005, participation in ceremonies, dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of Victory in Norfolk Island in the same year, and at the International Police Tattoo in Adelaide in 2006 are worthy of attention. The band is headed by the senior drummer Gavin Kirny.
